“Where I come from we say that rhythm is the soul of life, because the whole universe revolves around rhythm.”
— Babatunde Olatunji, Nigerian drummer and percussionist
Rhythm • Release • Connection • Joy
Sometimes, you don’t need to talk about what you’re carrying. Sometimes, you need to move it.
Have you been feeling stressed, mentally overloaded, emotionally heavy, or simply too much in your head?
Maybe life has become a long list of responsibilities. You’ve been working, caring for others, navigating change, or moving from one obligation to the next—and somewhere along the way, you’ve lost touch with the part of yourself that wants to play, move, create, connect, and feel fully alive.
Perhaps you’ve been craving community, but not necessarily more conversation. You want to be around people without having to explain yourself. You want an experience that gets you out of your head and back into your body.
This is where rhythm can become medicine.
Join Floyd Joynes for a powerful and uplifting Drum Circle designed to awaken rhythm, encourage connection, release tension, and remind us of something human beings have known for thousands of years:
We are rhythmic beings.
Our hearts beat.
Our breath rises and falls.
Our bodies respond instinctively to sound.
And when we gather in rhythm, something shifts.
The Ancient Medicine of the Drum
Across cultures and generations, drums have called people together for ceremony, storytelling, celebration, prayer, healing, movement, and community.
There is something beautifully primal about the drum. Its vibration doesn’t simply reach the ears—it can be felt through the body.
During this experience, Floyd will introduce fundamental playing techniques and guide the group through African-inspired rhythms, giving everyone an opportunity to explore the drum with curiosity rather than pressure.
You do not need musical experience.
You do not need to “have rhythm.”
And you certainly don’t need to perform.
This is a welcoming, non-judgmental circle where beginners and experienced players alike can listen, experiment, learn, and discover what happens when individual rhythms begin weaving themselves into one collective heartbeat.
More Than Making Music
Rhythmic drumming can offer a powerful way to shift attention away from the constant stream of thoughts and into an embodied experience of sound, movement, breath, and presence.
For those who spend much of life thinking, planning, problem-solving, caregiving, working, or carrying responsibility, that shift can feel incredibly refreshing.
The repetitive nature of rhythm may support relaxation, stress reduction, emotional release, focused attention, and nervous-system regulation. And beyond the physical experience, communal drumming offers something many of us are deeply hungry for:
belonging.
There is no need to be the best drummer in the room.
You simply bring your beat.
Someone else brings theirs.
And little by little, many separate sounds become something none of us could create alone.
Meet Your Guide: Floyd Joynes
Floyd brings far more than musical ability to this circle.
He is a dedicated, compassionate, and skilled sound practitioner and recording artist with a genuine love for sound, rhythm, and the way music can bring people together.
His relationship with the drum is heartfelt and intentional. Floyd brings a beautiful collection of well-constructed African drums for participants to experience, offering people the opportunity not only to hear these instruments, but to feel their resonance beneath their own hands.
What makes Floyd especially suited to lead this experience is the spirit he brings to it. His intention is not to create a room full of perfect musicians—it is to help create a circle where people feel comfortable enough to explore, participate, listen, laugh, learn, and find their own relationship with rhythm.
His passion for sound is contagious, and his grounded, compassionate presence makes this an experience where even someone touching a drum for the very first time can feel welcomed.
Come Find Your Rhythm
As the circle unfolds, expect moments of learning and listening, powerful collective rhythm, spontaneous expression, grounding, laughter, connection, and plenty of beautiful sound.
You may leave feeling energized yet centered.
More present in your body.
Lighter in your mind.
Connected to the people around you.
And perhaps a little more connected to yourself.
Come as you are. Bring what you’ve been carrying. Then give yourself permission to set some of it down and pick up a drum instead.
Let the beat move through your hands.
Let the rhythm move through your body.
Let community remind you that you don’t have to create every beat alone.
And together, let’s make some joyful noise.
What to Bring
Limited drums and percussion instruments will be available on a first-come basis, including some of Floyd’s beautiful African drums. Participants are warmly encouraged to bring their own drum or percussion instrument if they have one.
